Australian vintage prams - RESCUED!
Vintage Pram Rescue - Saving a piece of Australia's local
Our heritage & iconic prams, strollers and carriages
This album solely relates to vintage, antique and classic prams. An insight to modern pram rescue and recovery can be found in here
Unfortunately most people discard their old prams found sitting around in a run-down condition without so much as a second thought. The reality is that so much of our own historic and iconic items are completely lost over the course of time as new products emerge and the old disappear. This has happened to nearly all of our original Australian based brands, products and household names.
When it comes to prams and strollers, well, there certainly aren't too many of us out there that care, compared to the other collectors out there who collect and save the more mainstream items from around our country. For most people, prams and strollers are just that necessary 'consumer product' to "cart around the kids and all the necessary stuff that goes with them" as another dad once commented to me.
"Eeeww yuk! Nobody could possibly want that! It's filthy and ripped... chuck the pram in the trailer for the tip..."
In most people's eyes, a rusty, dirty and stained old pram is something to be discarded without even giving it a second thought. This is such a shame and a real loss, as I've personally cleaned and/or restored hundreds of beautiful prams over time.
Quite often many of the prams are actually 'low mileage' ones that are structurally like new and haven't really seen many real pavement 'miles' at all! Yet the prams looked (at least on the surface) quite shocking and sometimes even totally filthy and disgusting.
Some of the nicest and most complete examples have been saved from the once neglected and discarded prams / strollers like the ones throughout this album. The passion for cleaning and care runs just as deep as the passion to save these classics in the first place.
The prams have come from literally everywhere! From private sellers through to charity stores, trash 'n' treasure markets, garage sales, roadside rescues where the prams were placed out with the rubbish, and of course, good ol' fashion word of mouth! At times it’s been a bit of a criss-cross of the state saving some of these neglected and unwanted prams before it was too late.
Many miles and hours have gone into tracking down these prams and sometimes it can take several prams of a similar or identical model to restore just one prime example from that series. Back in the 90's and 00's even our recycling centres (transfer stations ,tips and landfills) both near and in country areas were contacted through the course of time with a request and a one page flyer left, to try and salvage what old Australian made brands they could possibly catch for me as they came through. The currency ranged from free to cash to beer depending on how remote some of these places were!
It was sort of a last ditch effort to find and preserve some of theses local classics... At times, saving some of these prams in the final hour (and on the odd occasion, even minutes before they were lost!) The costs involved with this have been enormous, certainly in a monetary sense, and at times, even a personal one. But, it has been a crusade driven by great passion to try and preserve these prams so we have something left, a piece of our own local manufacturing history left to show. Somehow...somewhere... sometime.
Heartfelt acquisitions of one owner prams from original owners, with corresponding history and some interesting stories have always been a real highlight too.
Do you have an old unloved pram still tucked away in the shed or garage? Is it rusty or ripped and you are thinking that nobody could possibly want it???
Please don't put it out to waste or take it to the tip. Please contact me below especially if you are located in Victoria!
Thank you :)
