Emmaljunga prams - Sweden
Emmaljunga (pronounced emm-a-yun-ga) have a pram manufacturing history in Sweden dating back to the mid 1920's. In Australia Emmaljungas started appearing on our shores in the early eighties, at a time when we had a fairly substantial amount of prams and nursery furniture still made in Australia. The early Emmaljungas were predominantly bassinet style prams, with some of the models having interchangeable stroller seats for the older child. Emmaljungas have long been regarded (especially in later years) by many parents as the closest thing to a traditional "proper pram" you could buy (apart from a very expensive Silver Cross pram and a few other various, quality four wheelers) and certainly a fairly worthy replacement for our original Australian home-grown prams and strollers that were seen pretty much everywhere until the mid eighties.
Having four fixed wheels of a reasonable size, and tracking in one direction only (straight!) Emmaljungas have been very popular for a long time as a true walking pram and the various styles, models, fabrics and colours produced have always been a favorite amongst parents looking for a larger and traditional styled pram. Although the Australian pram market is virtually dominated nowadays with smaller wheel/ swivel wheel and particularly three wheel strollers, Emmaljungas still have a place in the hearts of many Aussie parents and grandparents alike as a good old fashioned styled (but with many advancements and mod cons!)four wheel pram.
My Emmaljunga collection has grown steadily over time. I still own most of these prams in the various Emmaljunga albums, although some of the prams were cleaned & restored for friends. More albums will be added in 2008 separating many Emmaljunga models into their own groups. Later model Emmaljungas from around 2002-06 are stored and there are also twelve rare leatherlook / leatherette Emmaljungas to be taken out of storage and photographed in the near future as well. The popular leather (leatherette) Emmaljunga range ceased production around 1995 and of those original prams that may still be out there now, sadly many of them would probably be showing a significant amount of wear and tear by this time, unless those prams were looked after by other passionate pram people or cared for by conscientious parents!. The company's flagship model is still made in leatherette, it's called the Carmen. This particular pram is extremely rare in Australia, but quite popular in Europe and the UK today.
